I did this "oil" painting in 1991 -- I didn't realize until I saw the Turner exhibit at the Met in 2008, how I had been inspired by him -- bats and all! I say "oil" because out of naïvité I bought acrylic black instead of oil -- when I applied it to the oil and it started reacting, I thought "actually that's kinda cool"... Those didn't start out to be bats...

This painting was inspired after seeing a production of Bluebeard's Castle at the Metropolitan Opera; when Bluebeard shows Judith all his riches (the fifth door) the entire back of the Met stage unhinged, floated away in slow motion, and revealed that they were actually floating in space. I purposely kept the perspective off to create tension.

This is a study based on a 1960s B&W publicity headshot. I was learning Photoshop at the time and put the photo though various effects including taking away the features of her face. I was inspired to re-create it on canvas with paint.
