Art Works I've Done

"Transformation: Tasting" 2009

12" x 12" Acrylic, thread, mix-medium

Part of an "Art Day" with Michael and Chad. Hidden, are dozens of pins on the back of the canvas that hold the single piece of string. (see next photo)

"R&M: For Randy and Martin" 2010

24" x 36" Acrylic, Silver Leaf, Cardboard, Sand, Glass Gems (edging) on Canvas

A wedding gift for two good friends in Washington D.C. The initials of their first names are hinted at in the bottom left and top right corners.

"M&C: For Michael and Chad" 2002?

24" x 30" Acrylic, Gold Leaf, Tiles, Plaster on Canvas

A gift to two of my best friends, it now hangs in their New Jersey home. The initials of their first names are hinted at in the bottom left and top right corners.

Inspired by "Krug par" by Pierre Bonnefille.

"Gates of Hell/Heaven" 1991
30" x 48" Oil on canvas
I did this "oil" painting in 1991 -- I didn't realize until I saw the Turner exhibit at the Met in 2008, how I had been inspired by him -- bats and all! I say "oil" because out of naïvité I bought acrylic black instead of oil -- when I applied it to the oil and it started reacting, I thought "actually that's kinda cool"... Those didn't start out to be bats...

"Valhalla" 2004
48" x 60" Acrylic on Canvas

"After Monet" 1992
24" x 24" Oil on Canvas
Inspired by Monet's Seine at Giverny series

"Licht" 2007
12"x12" Acrylic and found objects (dried flowers and string) on canvas

"Floating Box" 1992
24" x 30" Acrylic on Canvas
This painting was inspired after seeing a production of Bluebeard's Castle at the Metropolitan Opera; when Bluebeard shows Judith all his riches (the fifth door) the entire back of the Met stage unhinged, floated away in slow motion, and revealed that they were actually floating in space. I purposely kept the perspective off to create tension.

"Arkansas Death" 1997
30" x 20" Acrylic on canvas

"Gold Triptych" 2004
Three 20" x 20" Acrylic, Gold Leaf, Glitter on Canvas

"For Jim and Boris" 2000

24" x 30" Acrylic on canvas

This now lives in their Chicago home.

"Woman in Blue" 1998

20" x 26" Acrylic on Canvas

This is a study based on a 1960s B&W publicity headshot. I was learning Photoshop at the time and put the photo though various effects including taking away the features of her face. I was inspired to re-create it on canvas with paint.

"Inevitability: Joker's Wild" 2010

12" x 12" Acrylic, mix-media on canvas

treat

I recently received a belated holiday gift from my good, good friend and co-conspirator from the Memphis days, Jackie. It's one of the best gifts I've ever received because if I saw it in a shop, I'd have to buy it. I hung it in front of a painting my friend, Frank, that was inspired by our trip to New Orleans. True synergy.
